Karnataka LoP R. Ashoka Protests Housing Delay, Gives Up Rent Allowance

A political row has erupted in Karnataka after Leader of Opposition R. Ashoka announced that he has stopped accepting house rent allowance from April 2026 in protest against the Congress government’s alleged failure to allot him an official residence of his preference. The issue, which began as an administrative dispute over government accommodation, has now snowballed into a wider political battle between the ruling Congress and the BJP.

In a letter dated May 21 to Karnataka Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh , Ashoka said he had repeatedly requested official quarters after assuming office as Leader of Opposition, but the government had failed to respond despite several reminders. He claimed the matter had been raised four times and that he had already informed the government he would stop receiving rent allowance if his request continued to be ignored.

“As the request of the Leader of Opposition has not been responded to, I am protesting without taking house rent allowance from April 2026,” Ashoka stated in the letter.

The senior BJP leader sought one among three prominent government residences in Bengaluru 1 Kumara Park East , 1 Race View Cottage or 2 Race View Cottage properties considered among the most prestigious official accommodations in Karnataka’s political establishment.

According to reports, Ashoka had also conveyed his displeasure directly to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and senior ministers recently. The controversy surfaced just days after the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government completed three years in office on May 20, adding a sharper political edge to the episode.

The BJP is now attempting to project the issue as a matter of institutional respect rather than merely housing allocation. Party leaders argue that the office of the Leader of Opposition deserves due protocol and recognition in a democratic system. Ashoka’s decision to voluntarily forgo rent allowance is also being viewed as a symbolic political protest aimed at portraying the Congress government as politically selective.

Political observers note that official residences in Bengaluru carry significant symbolic value, often reflecting political stature and access to power. In Karnataka’s highly polarized political climate, even administrative matters frequently evolve into larger political confrontations.

With the BJP aggressively targeting the Congress government on governance and administrative issues since losing power in 2023, the accommodation row has now become another flashpoint in the continuing political battle between the two parties in Karnataka.
