Kargil Veteran Allegedly Kills Wife, Son Before Dying by Suicide in Uttar Pradesh
A 51-year-old retired Army personnel and Kargil war veteran allegedly shot his wife and teenage son dead at their home in Uttar Pradesh before dying by suicide on a nearby railway track , police said on Monday.
The incident came to light early Monday morning after authorities received information about a man’s body found on the railway track near the Kathogar–Imlipur underpass . The body, believed to be a suicide after being run over by a goods train , was identified as Chetram Paswan through an Aadhaar card recovered from his pocket. A motorcycle parked nearby helped police trace his residence.
When officers reached his house in the Nai Basti locality of Tulsiyapur to inform family members, they discovered the bodies of his wife, Sunita Verma (40) , and their son Deep (16) inside the house. Police said Sunita was found near the bed with a gunshot wound to her head, while Deep was found near the bedroom entrance with a bullet injury to his chest. Bloodstains were visible along the path from the kitchen to the bedroom, and a licensed double-barrel gun was recovered from the scene.
Additional Commissioner of Police ( Law and Order ) Vipin Tada said preliminary findings point to a domestic dispute late Sunday night. He said Paswan allegedly shot his wife first, and the son is believed to have rushed in after hearing the gunshot and was also shot. Paswan is then suspected to have locked the house from outside and later died by suicide on the railway track.
“Prima facie, the case appears to be a murder-suicide . However, the exact sequence of events will be confirmed only after a detailed investigation,” the officer said.
Forensic teams collected blood samples, the weapon, CCTV footage and other evidence from the scene. Police said all angles, including possible family and financial issues , are being examined. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination.
Paswan, a native of Serua Bakhariya village in Ghatampur, had retired from the Indian Army and was working as a bank security guard while receiving a pension. The family had moved into their newly constructed house about three months ago.
Police sources said Paswan had earlier taken a loan of around ₹12 lakh for his daughter’s wedding and house construction. The loan was reportedly repaid recently after his father sold a portion of agricultural land. His daughter was married about six months ago.
Neighbours told police the couple had argued late Sunday night, though the motive behind the killings remains unclear. Meanwhile, Paswan’s brother has alleged foul play , insisting the war veteran “could not have committed such an act,” and has demanded a thorough investigation.
Police said further legal action will be taken based on forensic findings and the post-mortem report.
