Karbi Peace Accord Accelerated Development in Karbi Anglong, Says Himanta

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said the Karbi Peace Accord, signed five years ago, has significantly accelerated development in Karbi Anglong and helped the region move towards lasting peace and prosperity.

Marking the fifth anniversary of the landmark agreement, Sarma said Karbi Anglong had recorded progress across several growth parameters, demonstrating how dialogue and reconciliation can create a more resilient future.

“Today, we commemorate the historic signing of the Karbi Peace Accord, a pivotal milestone that forever transformed the socio-political landscape of Assam and turned a page from conflict to lasting harmony,” Sarma said in a social media post.

The Karbi Peace Accord was signed in New Delhi in 2021 between the Centre, the Assam government and five major insurgent groups operating in Karbi Anglong. The agreement brought an end to years of violence, killings and abductions linked to the armed groups’ demand for a separate homeland for the Karbi tribal community.

Sarma said the accord addressed the long-standing aspirations of the Karbi people while preserving the territorial integrity of Assam. He highlighted development initiatives undertaken since the agreement, including infrastructure improvements and targeted welfare measures for tribal communities.

According to the chief minister, the peace agreement has also created new opportunities for young people, artists and local entrepreneurs, contributing to broader economic and social development in the autonomous hill district.

“As Karbi Anglong marches ahead on the path of prosperity, we salute the spirit of peace and unity that made this agreement possible,” Sarma said, describing the accord as an example of how dialogue can help build a resilient future.

He reiterated the Assam government’s commitment to fast-paced development and the welfare of the region’s people, while ensuring that Karbi Anglong’s distinct cultural identity and interests remain protected.
