‘Kapas Kisan’ app - A Game changer for cotton farmers

Cotton farmers in Telangana can now sell their produce directly to the Central Cotton Inventory at the Minimum Support Price (MSP) through the “Kapas Kisan” mobile app, according to Union Minister Kishan Reddy. The initiative, implemented under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, allows farmers to bypass middlemen and earn fair returns on their crops.

Currently, the MSP for cotton is ₹8,110 per quintal, marking a 100% increase over the last decade. By registering on the “Kapas Kisan” app and booking a selling slot, farmers can directly market their cotton to the Central Cotton Inventory with support from both the central and state governments. Minister Kishan Reddy emphasized that the entire process would be managed centrally, ensuring no farmer is forced to sell through intermediaries.

The Telangana government is coordinating with the central authorities to implement a smooth and efficient procurement process. The aim is to ensure farmers’ cotton reaches the market safely and on time, while also helping stabilize agricultural markets and improve farmer welfare.

Procurement centers in Telangana

For the 2025-26 cotton marketing season, the central government has set up 122 procurement centers across Telangana. Farmers can book slots through the “Kapas Kisan” app and sell their cotton at these centers. The centers will be equipped with modern facilities, including seating, drinking water, and other amenities, to make the selling process convenient. Operations at these centers are scheduled to begin on October 22, 2025.

Higher profits by avoiding middlemen

Selling directly to the Central Cotton Inventory allows farmers to avoid middlemen, potentially increasing their income by 20-25%. Studies from countries like Ghana show that farmers who bypass intermediaries can increase their earnings by up to 225%. In India, direct marketing of produce could boost farmer incomes by around 27%. This approach helps reduce losses caused by intermediaries while maximizing profits.

Support for illiterate farmers

Recognizing that not all farmers are tech-savvy, the Telangana government has set up Kisan Call Centers to assist those who cannot use mobile apps. Using SMS and voice-based services, these centers provide farmers with the necessary guidance to sell their cotton.

Additionally, the Topfolio app - part of the MeeSeva 2.0 platform - offers access to various government services. While this app is helpful, illiterate farmers may find it challenging to use. The call centers bridge this gap by providing voice-based assistance, ensuring all farmers can benefit from the initiative.
