Kanwar Yatra Begins, Haridwar Braces for 4 Crore Devotees Under AI Security

The annual Kanwar Yatra commenced with the beginning of the holy month of Shravan, as millions of Lord Shiva devotees set out to collect sacred Gangajal from the Ganga and carry it to their hometowns for Jalabhishek on Shravan Shivratri. Running until August 11, the pilgrimage is expected to draw one of the world's largest religious gatherings, with Haridwar alone preparing to receive over four crore devotees. In response, authorities across Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Haryana have rolled out extensive security, traffic and medical arrangements, backed by AI-powered surveillance, drone monitoring and multi-state coordination.

Haridwar has turned saffron as thousands of Kanwariyas chanting "Bam Bhole" arrived at the Ganga ghats. The Uttarakhand government, under the supervision of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, has strengthened security by deploying additional police personnel and, for the first time, Cyber Commandos to monitor fake news, rumours and AI-generated misinformation on social media. Heavy vehicles have been barred from the city, schools in parts of Haridwar have been closed, around 1,000 additional sanitation workers deployed, and food safety inspections intensified.

Uttar Pradesh, through which lakhs of pilgrims travel, has launched one of its largest annual security operations by deploying 35,000 civil police personnel, 151 PAC companies and 11 paramilitary companies. A dedicated Kanwar Control Room in Lucknow is monitoring the yatra using AI-enabled CCTV cameras, drones and integrated command centres, with authorities aiming for "Zero Incident, Zero Accident." Thousands also visited the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi on the first day of Shravan.

At Muzaffarnagar, around 4,000 police personnel, including ATS and PAC teams, have been deployed alongside 45 medical camps, 78 ambulances, 14 bike ambulances and 100 reserved hospital beds. In Bareilly, where the Ala Hazrat Urs overlaps with the yatra, authorities have intensified surveillance and crowd management. Ghaziabad has installed 6,970 streetlights, repaired roads and activated medical camps, while enhancing monitoring with CCTV cameras, watch towers and temporary police booths.

The Delhi Police has tightened security across seven major entry points used by Kanwariyas, imposed traffic restrictions and coordinated with neighbouring states for seamless movement. The capital will host 308 authorised Kanwar camps until August 11. Meanwhile, Delhi Mayor Pravesh Wahi has urged the temporary closure of meat shops and roadside non-vegetarian stalls along major pilgrimage routes during the yatra. In neighbouring Gurugram, police have activated a 24-hour control room, deployed bomb disposal squads, dog squads, women help desks and dedicated Kanwar lanes, while creating green corridors for emergency vehicles.

Beyond security, authorities have expanded drinking water facilities, sanitation, first-aid centres and temporary medical camps along pilgrimage routes. The Kanwar Yatra also provides a significant seasonal boost to local economies, benefiting thousands of roadside vendors, transport operators, accommodation providers and small businesses across northern India, highlighting its growing religious, economic and logistical significance.
