Kanpur BTech Gold Medallist Dies by Suicide After Repeated Government Job Setbacks

A 23-year-old BTech gold medallist from Kanpur allegedly died by suicide after struggling for months to secure a government job , leaving behind a brief handwritten note apologising to his father for not being able to fulfil his dream despite making repeated attempts.

The deceased, Anand , had graduated in Electrical Engineering from PSIT in 2024, emerging as the college topper and securing third rank in Uttar Pradesh . His academic excellence had earned him a gold medal during the institution's annual function last year, making him a source of immense pride for his family.

According to police, Anand was found hanging from the ceiling fan in his room at the family's residence in the Gujaini area of Govind Nagar . The incident came to light after the family's domestic help received no response despite repeated knocks and alerted neighbours and the police. At the time, Anand's family had travelled to Bihar to finalise the marriage of his elder brother.

Police broke open the room and recovered a five-line handwritten note , in which Anand reportedly wrote, "Sorry, Papa, I tried nearly 50 times to get a government job, but I couldn't succeed. Please forgive me."

His father, Rajkumar , a retired employee of a private company and originally from Buxar, Bihar , said Anand had completed a one-year apprenticeship with Power Grid after graduation before dedicating himself entirely to competitive examinations.

He had appeared in recruitment exams conducted by the Railways, Staff Selection Commission (SSC), banks and the education department , but failed to secure a position despite repeated attempts. According to the family, he had been under severe mental stress for several months.

Police said the handwritten note has been recovered and an investigation is underway. Officials added that the initial findings indicate stress related to repeated failures in government recruitment exams, although all aspects of the case are being examined.

The tragedy has once again drawn attention to the intense emotional and psychological pressure faced by many young aspirants preparing for competitive examinations.
