Andhra Pradesh Tourism, Culture and Cinematography Minister Kandula Durgesh won praise from political colleagues and spectators alike after delivering a dramatic stage performance portraying freedom fighter Veerapandiya Kattabomman during a cultural programme in Vijayawada.

The performance was part of the “Aatavidupu” sports and cultural festival–2026 , organised for MLAs and MLCs under the banner of the Andhra Pradesh Legislature . The event was held on Friday evening at Antralok Hall in Patamata, Vijayawada , shortly after the Assembly sessions were adjourned indefinitely , providing legislators an opportunity to participate in recreational and cultural activities.

Dressed in the distinctive costume associated with Kattabomman , Durgesh delivered powerful dialogues with a commanding stage presence, reflecting the fearless spirit of the historical figure who resisted colonial authority. His dramatic expressions, royal demeanour, and intense dialogue delivery created a striking impression, drawing loud applause from the audience as he stepped onto the stage.

Among those who watched the performance were Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu , Assembly Speaker Ch. Ayyanna Patrudu , several ministers, and legislators. Many of them appreciated the minister’s effort to recreate a significant character from India’s freedom struggle through a cultural presentation.

Addressing the gathering, Kandula Durgesh described Veerapandiya Kattabomman as a powerful symbol of patriotism and resistance against the British East India Company . He noted that Kattabomman’s courageous stand against colonial rule remains a memorable chapter in India’s freedom movement . The minister also recalled the warrior’s bravery in the Battle of Panchalankurichi , saying such stories of courage continue to inspire future generations.

Durgesh said it was a matter of honour for him to portray the role of such a revered historical figure and stressed the importance of using cultural platforms to keep the legacy of freedom fighters alive.

The programme also featured a group performance to the patriotic song “Punyabhumi Naa Desam Namo Namami.” Durgesh joined Government Chief Whip G. V. Anjaneyulu , Minister Vasantha Subhash , MLAs Varla Kumar Raja and Sunil Kumar , and other public representatives for the presentation, which further energized the gathering.

The evening combined sports, culture, and patriotism, giving legislators a rare moment away from political proceedings while celebrating the spirit of India’s freedom struggle through artistic expression.
