Kamal Haasan’s MNM Opens Seat‑Sharing Dialogue with DMK as Poll Dynamics Shift

Actor‑politician Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) on Wednesday held its first formal seat‑sharing discussions with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections , in a significant step in the state’s evolving political landscape.

At Anna Arivalayam, the DMK headquarters, MNM general secretary A Arunachalam and senior party leaders presented data to the DMK’s seat‑sharing panel led by treasurer T R Baalu , outlining how MNM can strengthen the alliance’s prospects. DMK leaders said the inputs would be placed before Chief Minister M K Stalin for next steps, though exact seat numbers were not disclosed.

MNM, founded by Haasan in 2018 with a platform against corruption and dynastic politics, has struggled to convert its celebrity appeal into electoral victories. The party contested the 2019 Lok Sabha polls , garnering about 3.7 % vote share , and polled around 2.6 % in the 2021 Assembly elections , but failed to win any seats. Haasan himself narrowly lost in Coimbatore South in 2021 . These modest showings have pushed MNM toward alliances, including supporting the DMK‑led coalition in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and securing a Rajya Sabha seat for Haasan in 2025.

Negotiations are likely to focus on a small bouquet of urban and semi‑urban seats , reportedly where MNM’s support has been relatively higher, with sources suggesting MNM may push for around 10-15 seats , while DMK could be willing to concede just a fraction.

The opposition, mainly the AIADMK‑BJP combine , has sought to position itself as the principal challenger to DMK’s dominance. BJP leaders have questioned MNM’s political relevance and accused it of diluting anti‑incumbency sentiments by aligning early with DMK.

Political analysts say MNM’s inclusion, even with few seats, could affect vote transfers in key urban constituencies and help the DMK alliance consolidate its lead against the broader AIADMK‑BJP‑PMK front in a contest where the majority mark is 118 in a 234‑seat assembly.
