Four SFI activists were arrested after a protest at Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit in Kalady, Kerala, escalated into a confrontation with police and allegations of manhandling involving Vice-Chancellor Ciza Thomas and Syndicate members.

The August 13 demonstration was organised over alleged deficiencies in campus facilities and administrative grievances. SFI activists gathered near the block during a Syndicate meeting. Police alleged that protesters blocked officials, refused to disperse and clashed with personnel clearing the passage. The first case names 78 people, and four activists — Mebin, Basil, Yadhu and Vijesh — were arrested in connection with the alleged police clash.

A second case, based on Thomas's complaint, names 18 people. She alleged that SFI activists manhandled her and Syndicate members during the protest. Police have stressed that the investigation into this allegation is ongoing, meaning it has not been established as a finding against those accused.

The dispute also involves a symbolic “last rites” protest staged near the administrative office by theatre students. University authorities viewed the episode as part of the confrontation, while students have disputed the administration's interpretation. They said the symbolic protest concerned non-functional theatre spotlights, and argued that their agitation had been continuing over infrastructure and administrative issues.

University authorities condemned the protest. Kerala Higher Education Minister Roji M John also criticised SFI, while vice-chancellors of Kerala universities issued a joint statement condemning the incident. Their response has framed the episode as a serious concern for the safety of university officials and the orderly functioning of campuses.

SFI, however, has maintained its focus on student grievances and announced a campus strike on August 17. The strike is significant because it could intensify tensions immediately after the arrests and keep pressure on the university over unresolved campus facilities and administrative complaints.

The episode therefore has two parallel dimensions: a police case over the alleged clash, and a separate investigation into the Vice-Chancellor's allegations. The competing accounts remain unresolved, making the announced strike a potential flashpoint for further confrontation.
