Kakinada District Faces Deadly Fire Outbreak

February 28, 2026

Tragedy struck Kakinada district on Saturday when a powerful explosion ripped through the Surya Ban Sancha explosives unit near Vetlapalem in Samarlakota mandal. The blast killed 21 workers on the spot and left eight others critically injured.

The explosion occurred around 2 PM, instantly turning the area into a scene of horror. Bodies were scattered into nearby rice fields, many badly burned and unrecognizable. Around 30 workers were inside at the time. The fire spread rapidly due to the large stock of explosive materials, leaving no chance for survival.

State Minister Kandula Durgesh, who visited the site, expressed deep sorrow, saying, “Even a small spark could have triggered this catastrophic incident. The large quantity of explosives left no one a chance to escape.” He noted that most victims came from economically disadvantaged families.

Aftermath and Rescue Operations

The blast turned lush paddy fields into a scene of devastation. Rescue teams, assisted by drones, located scattered remains. Locals and officials worked together to recover bodies from fields and storage areas. Doctors at Kakinada General Hospital reported that seven of the injured are in critical condition, with burns covering up to 100% of their bodies.

Leaders Express Shock and Announce Aid

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed deep shock. The Prime Minister announced ₹2 lakh ex-gratia for each deceased family and ₹50,000 for the injured.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu announced ₹20 lakh assistance for each bereaved family, assured full government coverage for medical treatment of the injured, and ordered the immediate suspension of four senior Kakinada district officials for negligence.

Other leaders, including Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Union Ministers G. Kishan Reddy and Bandi Sanjay Kumar, expressed condolences and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

Investigation Underway

Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the explosion. Preliminary probes are looking into possible safety violations and whether explosives were stored beyond permitted limits. The government has pledged full support to the victims’ families.

Second Tragedy in Six Months

This is the second major explosion in the region within six months. A similar blast occurred near Rayavaram in Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema district. Vetlapalem is less than 30 kilometers from that site, raising concerns about safety standards and monitoring of explosive materials in the area.
