Kadapa Smart Kitchen Initiative Earns NITI Aayog Recognition

The Smart Kitchen initiative being implemented in YSR Kadapa district has received recognition from NITI Aayog, highlighting the district’s efforts to improve the quality, safety and nutritional value of meals served to schoolchildren.

Officials said school meals play an important role in children’s health, growth and overall well-being, making food quality, nutrition and hygiene key priorities under the programme. The district currently has 38 Smart Kitchens in operation, incorporating technology-driven systems to streamline meal preparation and delivery.

The initiative uses mechanised cooking processes and standardised food-safety practices to ensure consistency in the preparation of meals. A GPS-enabled meal delivery system helps track supplies, while real-time monitoring mechanisms enable authorities to oversee operations more effectively. A QR code-based feedback system also allows stakeholders to share their views on the quality of food and services.

A key feature of the Kadapa model is its focus on sustainability and women-led self-help groups. Their participation has helped create a community-oriented approach to managing school meal services while also strengthening opportunities for women’s groups.

Officials said the recognition by NITI Aayog would encourage the district to further strengthen the initiative and explore ways to expand the model. They stressed that the broader objective is to ensure that students receive safe, nutritious and high-quality meals consistently.

Minister Nara Lokesh thanked NITI Aayog for recognising the initiative and appreciated the efforts being made to improve school nutrition and food-service standards in the district.

Authorities said continued efforts would focus on upgrading the Smart Kitchen network, strengthening monitoring systems and ensuring that technology and community participation together deliver better outcomes for schoolchildren.
