Kadaba Moral Policing Case: 9 Booked After Alleged Assault in Dakshina Kannada

A case of alleged moral policing and assault in Dakshina Kannada has triggered concerns over vigilante-style interference after nine people were booked in connection with an August 12 incident at Konalu Kolpe in Kadaba.

According to 18-year-old Fayiza’s complaint, she returned home from work in a car with acquaintances Siphnan, Zahir and Safiya. After dropping Fayiza at her residence, the three allegedly proceeded towards Konalu Kolpe. The accused allegedly intercepted them, prevented them from moving ahead and abused them using obscene language.

Fayiza later reached the spot with Jamal and her younger sister. The complaint alleges that they too were subjected to verbal abuse and assault. Local reports allege slapping, pushing, threats and physical attacks, including hospital treatment for Fayiza and her sister afterward. These claims remain allegations and are yet to be established through investigation or judicial proceedings.

The nine people booked are Jabir, Siddique, Unais, Ramshik, Shamshuddin, Jaffer, Ashith, Achuru alias Ashraf and Ashraf Kolpe. Uppinangady police registered the case under Sections 189(2), 191(2), 126(2), 352, 115(2) and 351(2), read with Section 190 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The provisions cover offences linked to unlawful assembly, rioting, wrongful restraint, intentional insult, voluntarily causing hurt and criminal intimidation, among related liability.

Police have said the investigation is still underway. The latest available reports do not indicate that a chargesheet has been filed or that arrests have been publicly announced in the case.

Beyond the FIR, the incident raises broader concerns about moral policing and the limits of private intervention. Disagreements over friendships, travel or social interactions do not give private groups the authority to stop people, restrict movement, threaten them or use violence. Alleged verbal abuse can also escalate rapidly into physical harm, particularly when women are targeted.

The case underscores the importance of lawful policing, accountability and protection of individual autonomy. At the same time, allegations against the nine accused must be tested through evidence, investigation and due process rather than treated as established guilt.
