Jupiter Wagons Secures Rs 1,140-Crore Railway Order for 2,583 Wagons
Jupiter Wagons Ltd on Thursday said it has secured an order worth Rs 1,140 crore from the Ministry of Railways for manufacturing 2,583 wagons, strengthening its order pipeline amid sustained demand for railway freight infrastructure. The order covers two types of wagons, BOXNHL and BOXNS, the company said in a statement. Jupiter Wagons said its private-sector order book also remained strong, supported by steady demand from private freight operators, wagon leasing companies and customers in core industrial sectors.
The company expects to secure additional orders worth around Rs 2,000 crore in the fourth quarter of the 2026-27 financial year, indicating a positive near-term business outlook. Demand prospects have also improved following the Railway Ministry's recent tender for the procurement of 5,800 BOBRN wagons, the company added.
"Indian Railways is adding freight capacity at a scale and pace this country has not seen before," Managing Director Vivek Lohia said. He said Jupiter Wagons had achieved backward integration across several stages of the wagon manufacturing value chain, including castings, bogies, couplers and brake systems.
The company is now extending this integration to wheelsets through its facility in Odisha, Lohia said, adding that the move would provide greater control over costs, product quality and delivery schedules.
Backward integration enables manufacturers to manage key components internally, potentially reducing dependence on external suppliers and improving production efficiency. The latest railway order comes as Indian Railways continues to expand its freight-handling capacity to support the movement of goods across the country.
According to the company, the order is aligned with the government's National Rail Plan, which aims to increase the share of railways in freight transportation. The plan seeks to strengthen railway infrastructure and improve the efficiency of freight movement, supporting the logistics requirements of India's growing economy.
With fresh government orders, a strong private-sector pipeline and expected additional order inflows, Jupiter Wagons is looking to capitalise on investment in railway infrastructure and rising demand for freight transportation equipment.
