Juniors fired up as World Championship nears in Guwahati

With the World Junior Badminton Championships just days away, India’s young shuttlers received a powerful boost of motivation from some of the country’s finest stars. HS Prannoy, Lakshya Sen, and Ashwini Ponnappa shared their experiences and advice, urging the 25-member Indian squad to seize the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity on home soil.

“Representing India at the World Juniors is probably a once-in-a-lifetime chance,” said Prannoy, who won a world junior bronze in 2010 and has since become one of Indian badminton’s leading lights. “This is the first stepping stone to the senior level. Play against the best, learn, and prepare for the next stage of your career.”

Lakshya Sen, who has earned medals in both junior and senior world championships, reminded the players of the advantages of competing at home. “It’s your home turf. Focus, stay disciplined, and make the most of the support and conditions here,” said the 24-year-old from Almora.

Women’s doubles star Ashwini Ponnappa urged the juniors to trust their training and enjoy the experience. “Play with confidence, trust your preparations, and give your best. The medals will follow,” she said.

The Indian team has a proud history at the World Juniors, having won 11 medals so far, including one gold and four silver. The 2025 edition, being hosted in Guwahati from October 6-19, marks 17 years since India last hosted the event in Pune in 2008, where Saina Nehwal claimed gold.

Seeded second, India is eyeing a historic podium finish in the mixed team event while aiming for strong performances in the individual categories. With guidance from senior stars and top-class preparations at the National Centre of Excellence, the juniors are ready to step onto the global stage and inspire a new generation of badminton enthusiasts.
