Junior Hockey coach remanded for raping minor student

A junior hockey coach was arrested by the Rewari police on Friday following allegations of raping and impregnating a minor athlete training under him. The case, which has caused significant outrage in the local sporting community, came to light after the victim suffered a miscarriage and required urgent hospitalization.

The survivor, a Class 12 student and a promising hockey player from a local village, had been training under the accused for nearly three years. In her formal complaint lodged at the Khol police station , the girl alleged that the coach assaulted her approximately four months ago in a bathroom at the stadium where her practice sessions were held.

The crime remained hidden until the victim’s health took a critical turn. According to police officials, she suffered a miscarriage on January 5 , which led to severe medical complications. When her condition failed to improve at home, her family rushed her to a hospital, where she eventually disclosed the abuse. Based on her statement, the police registered a First Information Report (FIR) on January 9 under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) .

The accused was apprehended late Friday night and produced before a city court on Saturday. The court has granted the police a two-day remand to allow for further interrogation and the collection of forensic evidence from the site of the alleged crime. Authorities stated that the investigation is ongoing to ensure all legal protocols are met and that the evidence is documented thoroughly for the trial.

This arrest follows a series of troubling reports regarding the safety of female athletes in the region. Just days prior, a national-level shooting coach in Faridabad was booked for the sexual harassment of a minor, prompting sports activists to demand a systemic audit of safety protocols in all district-level academies. Local NGOs have renewed calls for the mandatory appointment of female chaperones and the active functioning of Internal Complaints Committees (ICC) in sports facilities to prevent the exploitation of young athletes. The victim is currently reported to be in stable condition and is receiving both medical care and psychological counseling.
