Jr NTR moves Delhi High Court to safeguard his personality rights

Jr NTR has joined the growing list of Indian film stars, including Mohan Babu, Chiranjeevi and Nagarjuna, who have approached the Delhi High Court seeking protection of their personality rights. This collective move reflects an urgent need within the film industry to legally shield celebrity identities from unauthorized commercial and digital exploitation.

In his petition, Jr NTR has stated that his name, voice, signature, photograph, image, caricature, likeness, persona and all identifiable attributes form an essential part of his personality rights. These rights give a public figure exclusive control over how their identity is used, ensuring that no individual, brand, platform or entity exploits their fame for commercial gain without consent.

Personality rights have become especially crucial in recent cases related to misleading endorsements, fake merchandise, AI-created deepfakes and impersonation on social media. Courts have increasingly acknowledged that unauthorized use of a celebrity’s attributes can harm their reputation, confuse audiences, encourage false affiliations and cause emotional as well as financial damage. This legal protection also extends to preventing the use of a celebrity’s likeness in advertisements, political campaigns, brand promotions, virtual avatars or even manipulated content that can distort public perception.

Jr NTR’s petition argues that the rise of AI tools and digital marketing has made it easier for third parties to replicate his persona, creating a higher risk of misuse. By seeking judicial recognition and restraint orders, the actor aims to ensure that no content creator, advertiser or platform uses his identity without formal approval. His move adds further momentum to the industry’s ongoing effort to establish strong legal boundaries for personality rights in India, setting the stage for more structured regulation in the evolving digital landscape.
