Jofra Does It All: Rajasthan Royals Crush Mumbai by 30 Runs to Clinch the 4th IPL Playoff Spot
In a match that had everything at stake for one side and nothing but wounded pride for the other, Rajasthan Royals delivered when it mattered the most. Riding on a breathtaking all round display from Jofra Archer , the Royals defeated Mumbai Indians by 30 runs at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday to seal the fourth and final playoff berth of IPL 2026 , ending the tournament hopes of both Punjab Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders in the process.
Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and elected to field first, but it was a decision that would come back to haunt him. Yashasvi Jaiswal gave Rajasthan a blazing start, smashing 27 runs with a flurry of boundaries, before Dhruv Jurel steadied the innings with 38 off 26 balls. Dasun Shanaka provided an explosive cameo of 29 off 15 balls to accelerate the scoring, and just when MI thought they had the Royals pegged back, Jofra Archer arrived. The English seamer cracked a stunning 32 off just 15 balls, helping Rajasthan reach 205 for 8. A late push from Ravindra Jadeja and Nandre Burger added a crucial 30 run ninth wicket stand.
Chasing 206, Mumbai’s reply collapsed from the very first delivery. Rohit Sharma , brought in as an Impact Substitute, was dismissed for a four ball duck by Archer, with MI yet to open their account. Archer struck again in the third over, removing Naman Dhir as the ball swung sharply after pitching. With his 19th IPL duck, Rohit equalled an unwanted record held by Glenn Maxwell . Ryan Rickelton and Tilak Varma also fell cheaply, leaving MI struggling at 38 for 4.
Suryakumar Yadav and Will Jacks fought back with a 63 run partnership, taking MI past 100. Suryakumar reached his fifty in 32 balls and was supported by Hardik Pandya , who counterattacked with a quick 34 off 15 balls. But the chase slipped away again when Archer removed Pandya at a key moment, and Nandre Burger dismissed Suryakumar for 60 with a sharp caught and bowled.
Archer ended with brilliant figures of 3 for 17 , while Burger, Brijesh Sharma and Yash Raj Punja picked up two wickets each as Mumbai were bowled out for 175 for 9.
At the end of a breathless afternoon, it was no surprise when Jofra Archer walked up to collect the Player of the Match award, the only man who could have won it on a day when he single handedly wrote Rajasthan Royals’ playoff story with both bat and ball in hand.
With the win, Rajasthan Royals finished the group stage on 16 points , confirming a top four finish . They will now face Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Eliminator in Mullanpur on May 27. For Mumbai Indians , it was a disappointing end to a poor season, finishing ninth overall.
