In one of the most remarkable stories in Indian domestic cricket, Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) scripted history by winning their first ever Ranji Trophy title , ending a 67‑year wait since their debut in the tournament. The final against Karnataka ended in a draw on Saturday, but J&K’s giant first‑innings lead ensured they were crowned champions at the KSCA Cricket Stadium in Hubballi.

From underdogs to champions, J&K’s season was a testament to resilience and teamwork. They outplayed several top sides on their way to the final, including victories against Mumbai, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh and Bengal. The journey culminated in a commanding performance against a star‑studded Karnataka side, earning them a maiden Ranji title that will be etched in cricket history.

Batting first, J&K posted a massive 584 , driven by a superb century from Shubham Pundir (121) and solid contributions from Yawer Hassan (88) , captain Paras Dogra (70) and Kanhaiya Wadhawan (70) . Karnataka, in reply, were dismissed for 293 , with pace spearhead Auqib Nabi claiming a vital 5/54 to swing the game decisively. J&K then resumed their second innings on Day 5 at 186/4 , with Qamran Iqbal (160) and Sahil Lotra (101) completing unbeaten centuries as the side amassed 342/4 , leading by 633 runs overall before the captains shook hands.

J&K’s campaign also highlighted individual brilliance. Auqib Nabi finished as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker with 60 scalps, a rare feat for a fast bowler in Ranji Trophy history and a record for the J&K team. Shubham Pundir earned Player of the Match honours for his first innings century. Qamran Iqbal and Sahil Lotra showcased temperament and skill in the final, while captain Paras Dogra , with over 10,000 Ranji runs, guided the team with experience and composure throughout the tournament.

The triumph has also sparked discussions about national selection. Nabi’s consistent wicket-taking prowess has led to talk of a potential India call-up , particularly in red-ball formats where selectors are seeking fresh pace options. Many observers suggested his performances make him a strong candidate for upcoming Test series, including overseas tours. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah hailed the victory as a “very big moment” and stressed that standout performers deserve consideration for higher honours.

Jammu and Kashmir’s Ranji Trophy victory marks not only a historic team milestone but also a platform for individual players to step onto the national stage.
