Streaming platform JioHotstar witnessed an unprecedented surge in online audiences as millions of fans tuned in to watch the final of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup between the India national cricket team and the New Zealand national cricket team, turning the match into one of the most-watched live sporting streams in history.

As India moved closer to lifting the trophy on March 8, viewership numbers on the platform soared dramatically. At its peak, JioHotstar recorded more than 82 crore concurrent viewers , creating a global streaming record and setting a new benchmark for digital sports broadcasting. The staggering numbers highlighted the explosive growth of digital cricket viewership in India , where millions followed the match simultaneously on smartphones and connected TVs.

The blockbuster final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad delivered fireworks on the field as well. India piled up 255 for 5 , the highest total in a T20 World Cup final , before bowling New Zealand out for 159 to seal a dominant 96-run victory .The streaming frenzy had been building throughout the tournament. Just days earlier, the India versus England semi-final had already created a milestone with 65.2 million concurrent viewers , which briefly held the world streaming record before the final surpassed it.

The new numbers also eclipsed several earlier benchmarks in cricket streaming. The final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 had previously drawn about 61 million concurrent viewers , while the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup final between India and Australia reached roughly 59 million online viewers . Even earlier, the IPL 2023 final stunned the industry by attracting over 32 million concurrent streams , which was considered extraordinary at the time.

Industry experts say the record-breaking audience reflects a dramatic shift in sports consumption patterns, with affordable mobile data and widespread smartphone access accelerating the shift from television to digital streaming . The tournament’s massive reach further confirms India’s emergence as the largest digital cricket market in the world .

With billions of minutes watched during the tournament and multiple records shattered within days, the T20 World Cup final has not only crowned a champion on the field but also signalled a defining moment for the future of sports broadcasting.
