Jindal Stainless Scouts for Land in Maharashtra for ₹40,000-Crore Mega Plant

Jindal Stainless Ltd is evaluating multiple land options in Maharashtra for its proposed ₹40,000-crore stainless steel manufacturing facility, with the company expecting clarity on the final site within the next one or two quarters.

The project would be one of the company's biggest domestic capacity expansions. Once fully operational, it could take Jindal Stainless' Indian manufacturing capacity from around 3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 7 MTPA.

Jindal Stainless signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Maharashtra government in September 2025 for a 4 MTPA facility in Raigad. The investment under the agreement was pegged at ₹41,580 crore, while earlier announcements had cited around ₹40,000 crore and, at one stage, ₹42,886 crore.

However, identifying Raigad as the project district does not mean the specific site has been acquired. CEO Tarun Khulbe said the company is still scouting several land options. The process is progressing, with clarity expected within another one or two quarters.

Jindal Stainless currently operates major facilities in Jajpur, Odisha, and Hisar, Haryana, with around 3 MTPA of Indian capacity. The Maharashtra facility would become its third major manufacturing base, adding 4 MTPA and increasing domestic capacity by about 133%. The plant will be developed in phases, with the first phase expected to become operational within around four years.

The Maharashtra location would strengthen the company's presence in western and central India, bringing production closer to major automotive, infrastructure, engineering and industrial customers. However, the company has not disclosed how much output would be consumed in Maharashtra or western India.

The facility will produce specialised stainless steel grades for hydrogen, nuclear energy, defence, mobility, infrastructure and process industries.

The Maharashtra government will facilitate land processes, approvals, clearances and applicable fiscal incentives, but will not control the plant's operations. The ₹40,000-crore figure represents the announced project investment, not money already spent, while the company has not disclosed its final funding mix.

The project is part of a wider expansion strategy involving investments in Odisha and Gujarat, a proposed 1.2 MTPA Indonesian melt shop, and speciality-steel expansion under the PLI 1.2 scheme. It is expected to create more than 15,500 jobs.

For now, the immediate milestone remains finalising the specific land parcel.
