Jimmy Kimmel thanks Trump… with a sarcastic twist at Critics Choice Awards
Television host and comedian Jimmy Kimmel won the award for Best Talk Show at the 31st annual Critics Choice Awards held at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica on January 4, and his acceptance speech became one of the most talked-about moments of the evening. Kimmel accepted the honour for Jimmy Kimmel Live! , marking the show’s tenth Critics Choice nomination and its second win, and used his time on stage to blend humour, political commentary, and pointed satire .
Kimmel began by thanking his wife, producers, crew members, writers, actors, and union supporters who stood by him during a turbulent year. He emphasised the importance of free speech in entertainment , saying, “Thanks to all the writers and actors and producers and union members, many of you who are in this room, who supported us, who really stepped forward us and reminded us that we do not take free speech for granted in this city or in this country. Your actions were important, and we appreciate them.”
Turning to President Donald Trump , Kimmel used his trademark sarcastic tone to address their ongoing feud. He said, “ Without whom, we would be going home empty-handed tonight. So thank you, Mr. President, for all the many ridiculous things you do each and every day . It’s been a banner couple of weeks, and we can’t wait to get back on the air tomorrow night to talk about them.” He also joked about Trump’s recent FIFA Peace Prize recognition, quipping, “ A FIFA Peace Prize would have been better, but this is nice too .”
The remarks come after a controversial period in 2025, when Jimmy Kimmel Live! was temporarily suspended for six days following Kimmel’s critical commentary on the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk . The suspension sparked widespread discussion about free speech, drew criticism from Trump allies, and led to a surge in viewership upon the show’s return, with many entertainers and industry figures publicly supporting Kimmel.
Kimmel’s Critics Choice moment underscored both his enduring role in late-night comedy and the continuing clash between entertainment and politics. The ceremony, hosted by Chelsea Handler, featured winners across film and television categories, but Kimmel’s blend of humour, political satire, and direct commentary dominated headlines and social media discussions.
