Jharkhand tragedy: Infant dies, father left to carry baby’s body in box, NHRC steps in
In a heartrending incident that has shaken public conscience, the father of a newborn in West Singhbhum, Jharkhand, was forced to carry his child’s lifeless body in a cardboard box after the local hospital denied an ambulance.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India, has taken suo motu cognizance of the tragedy at Chakradharpur Sub-Divisional Hospital , where lack of adequate care reportedly contributed to the infant’s death. According to media reports, the hospital staff not only failed to provide necessary support during pre- and post-delivery care but also allegedly forced the family to remove the newborn’s body from hospital premises.
The incident, which took place on 7th March 2026 , highlights a serious violation of human rights , prompting the NHRC to issue notices to the Secretary, Department of Health, Medical Education & Family Welfare, Ranchi , and the Deputy Commissioner, West Singhbhum , seeking a detailed report within two weeks.
The Commission stated that if the reports are true, the lack of basic medical assistance and ambulance services reflects a grave negligence that warrants immediate investigation. The NHRC’s move underscores the urgent need for accountability and improvements in maternal and infant healthcare in rural areas.
Local authorities are expected to submit a comprehensive explanation regarding the circumstances that led to this tragedy, including why the family was denied an ambulance and the steps the hospital took, or failed to take, to ensure the safety of the mother and child.
This case has ignited widespread concern across Jharkhand and beyond, with public calls for stricter monitoring of healthcare facilities and better emergency response systems. Human rights advocates insist that such lapses should never happen again , emphasizing the essential role of government oversight in protecting the most vulnerable.
