Jharkhand district empowers transgender community with beautician training, certification

In a significant move toward inclusive skill development and economic empowerment , the Ramgarh district administration in Jharkhand on Friday awarded beautician certificates to 14 members of the transgender community , marking what officials described as a first-of-its-kind initiative in the state .

The beneficiaries completed a fortnight-long training programme held at a centre in Bhurkunda between March 16 and April 2. The certificates were distributed at a function held at the district collectorate by Deputy Commissioner Faiz Aq Ahmed Mumtaz , who said the programme was part of a broader effort to integrate transgender individuals into mainstream livelihood opportunities .

Officials highlighted that such initiatives are crucial given the systemic marginalisation faced by the transgender community, which often limits access to formal employment, education, and social security. Skill-based training in trades like beauty and wellness is seen as a practical pathway to self-employment , enabling participants to open salons or secure jobs in an expanding service sector.

“This is not just a training programme but a step towards dignity and financial independence ,” the DC said, adding that the administration has also undertaken measures such as building transgender-friendly public toilets and supporting community-run cafes to foster inclusion.

For many participants, the certification represents a turning point. Himansi Kinnar , one of the trainees, said the initiative has opened doors to sustainable income and social acceptance . “We can now start our own beauty parlours and build a better future,” she said.

The programme reflects a growing recognition among local administrations that targeted skilling initiatives , combined with supportive infrastructure, can play a key role in bridging long-standing gaps and ensuring that marginalised communities are not left behind in development.
