
Jealousy turns violent: Groom’s lover attacks bride with acid days before wedding
A 21-year-old bride-to-be sustained serious burn injuries after she was allegedly attacked with acid by the groom’s ex partner during a pre-wedding ceremony in northeast Delhi, police said on Wednesday.
The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon in the Gokalpuri area , where the victim’s family had gathered for a mehendi function ahead of her wedding scheduled for April 19. According to police sources, the accused, a 26-year-old woman, entered the house posing as a guest and did not arouse suspicion.
She reportedly interacted normally with those present and even engaged in conversation with the victim. However, in a sudden turn of events, the woman allegedly threw acid on the victim’s face using a bottle she had brought with her.
Family members and guests immediately intervened and managed to apprehend the accused at the spot before informing the police. The victim was rushed to Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital , where she is undergoing treatment for burns to her eyes, face, neck, and hand . Doctors have kept her under observation, and her condition is reported to be critical .
Preliminary investigation indicates that the accused is a neighbour of the victim and was allegedly in a five-year relationship with the groom-to-be . Police said she was opposed to the marriage and is suspected to have carried out the attack out of jealousy and resentment .
The accused has been arrested and produced before a local court, which remanded her to judicial custody .
Police are also investigating the source of the acid used in the attack and examining possible lapses in its sale and distribution. Further investigation is underway.
