JD Vance And Usha Vance Welcome Baby Boy Alec Neel, First Child Born To Sitting Vice President In 156 Years

Vice President JD Vance and second lady Usha Vance announced on Sunday the birth of their fourth child, a baby boy named Alec Neel Vance, making him the first child born to a sitting vice president in 156 years. The last such birth occurred in 1870, when Ellen Colfax, wife of then Vice President Schuyler Colfax, delivered a son while her husband held office. The couple confirmed in a joint social media statement that Alec was born on Sunday morning and that both mother and baby are healthy, adding that their three older children were overjoyed to meet their new sibling.

Alec joins his siblings Ewan, aged nine, Vivek, aged six, and Mirabel, aged four. The family thanked the medical teams at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and the White House Medical Unit for their care throughout the pregnancy and delivery.

The baby's name has drawn considerable attention online. Alec is a Greek origin name, commonly used as a shortened form of Alexander, traditionally interpreted as defender of men. His middle name, Neel, has been linked both to Sanskrit origins, where it translates to blue, a colour associated with calm and depth, and to Celtic names such as Neil or Niall, meaning champion, reflecting Usha Vance's Indian American heritage.

Usha Vance, a former attorney who once clerked for Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, becomes only the second spouse of a sitting vice president to give birth while her husband held office. JD Vance has previously credited Erika Kirk, widow of activist Charlie Kirk, for influencing the couple's decision to expand their family, after she expressed regret over not having had more children before her husband's assassination last year.

A vocal advocate for higher birth rates in the United States, Vance, a former US Marine, has repeatedly urged Americans to have more children, once declaring at the 2025 March for Life that he wanted more babies born nationwide. He has indicated it is unlikely he will take formal parental leave following Alec's arrival.
