A Japanese national, reportedly a journalist with NHK , who had been detained in Iran since January, was released on bail on Monday , Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara confirmed Tuesday. He said the Japanese embassy in Tehran verified the release, adding that Japan is still pursuing a full release of its citizens.

Ambassador Tamaki Tsukada met the individual, confirming they were in good health , though further details were not disclosed. This follows a similar case last year when another Japanese national detained in Iran was released and returned home in March.

The detained journalist was arrested on January 20 by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and later transferred to Evin Prison , a notorious detention facility known for holding political prisoners and foreign detainees. No formal charges have been publicly disclosed, but human rights organizations and media watchdogs expressed concern, noting that Iran has increasingly detained journalists and foreign nationals amid domestic unrest and heightened security measures.

Experts suggest that Iran’s detention of foreign nationals, including journalists, is sometimes used as leverage in diplomatic negotiations with other countries. In this case, Japan’s efforts to secure the journalist’s release intensified following phone talks between Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi , where Motegi urged the release of all Japanese nationals detained in Iran. Araghchi said he took the request seriously.

Observers suggest the bail decision may be the result of sustained diplomatic engagement by Japan , combined with Iran’s effort to limit international criticism while still projecting adherence to its legal framework. The journalist, however, has not been allowed to leave the country, and legal proceedings or formal charges could still follow. The development also comes in the backdrop of another recent case in which a Japanese national was released from detention in Iran, highlighting a pattern of arrests and conditional releases that often intersect with diplomatic negotiations.

Japan’s government emphasized its commitment to ensuring the safe and complete release of its citizens and continues to monitor the situation closely.
