Japan reaffirms support for Ukraine in first phone talks between leaders
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on Wednesday reaffirmed Japan’s steadfast support for Ukraine during her first phone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy since taking office on October 21, highlighting Tokyo’s commitment to Kyiv amid ongoing conflict with Russia.
The 30-minute call focused on Ukraine’s recovery and reconstruction, with Takaichi emphasising Japan’s backing for a just and lasting peace as soon as possible. Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for Japan’s past assistance, including economic sanctions against Russia, and welcomed Tokyo’s readiness to provide equipment for the energy sector, helping Ukrainian communities endure the winter.
Security and development cooperation also featured prominently in the talks. Both leaders noted that Russia’s war in Ukraine poses risks not just to Europe, but to the global order, including the Indo-Pacific region, reaffirming their commitment to close collaboration. Takaichi highlighted Japan’s recent initiatives to address landmine impacts, such as training demining personnel and enhancing medical and welfare support for victims.
Japan has consistently supported Ukraine since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022, viewing European and Indo-Pacific security as interconnected. Alongside the United States and other Group of Seven nations, Tokyo has maintained sanctions on Russia while continuing diplomatic and humanitarian aid to Ukraine.
On the same day, Takaichi also spoke with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, marking their first official conversation. The two leaders expressed a shared interest in elevating bilateral relations in security, economic, and strategic cooperation, and in collaborating with like-minded nations to maintain a free, open, and stable international order. Observers say these talks signal Japan’s efforts to strengthen global alliances and promote coordinated responses to geopolitical threats, underscoring Tokyo’s growing role in linking European and Indo-Pacific security agendas.
Through these high-level engagements, Takaichi has demonstrated Japan’s dual focus: supporting Ukraine in the immediate conflict while advancing broader diplomatic and strategic ties to ensure international stability.
