Jannik Sinner claims 21st career title

Jannik Sinner capped off a strong week in Beijing by defeating American teenager Learner Tien 6-2, 6-2 in Wednesday’s China Open final, claiming his third title of the season and the 21st of his career. The victory also serves as a boost ahead of the Shanghai Masters.

Sinner, who had been disappointed by his early exit at the U.S. Open, bounced back with a commanding performance against the 19-year-old Tien, who became the second-youngest player to reach a China Open final. “We will try to improve and push for more and let's see what the rest of the season looks like, but I am very happy,” Sinner said after the match.

Earlier in the tournament, Sinner defeated Alex de Minaur 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 in the semifinals, marking his 11th straight career win against the Australian. That victory also extended his streak to nine consecutive finals at hard-court tournaments.

Tien, ranked No. 52, reached his first ATP tour final after Daniil Medvedev retired injured in the semifinals with the score at 5-7, 7-5, 4-0. Despite the loss, Tien’s run in Beijing has been a major breakthrough for the young American.

Sinner now heads to Shanghai as one of the favorites, particularly after Carlos Alcaraz withdrew from the Japan Open due to an ankle injury, having won the title just a day earlier.

The China Open coincides with the WTA 1000 event, which is now into the fourth round. Top players including Iga Swiatek and Jessica Pegula are scheduled for Wednesday matches, while second-seeded Coco Gauff has already advanced to the quarterfinals, set to face Eva Lys on Thursday.
