‘Jana Nayagan’ Release in Limbo After High Court Intervention

The Madras High Court’s First Bench , comprising Chief Justice M M Shrivastava and Justice G Arul Murugan, on Tuesday set aside a single judge’s order directing the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to grant a censor certificate to actor Vijay’s much-anticipated film, “Jana Nayagan.”

The single judge, Justice P T Asha, had on January 9 allowed a petition filed by the film’s producer, M/s KVN Productions LLP , and directed CBFC to issue the certificate immediately . She had also quashed a communication from the CBFC’s regional office referring the film to the revising committee following a complaint from one of the examining committee members. This move effectively bypassed the CBFC’s internal review process.

However, the First Bench ruled that the single judge acted prematurely . The Bench emphasized that CBFC had not been given time to file a counter-affidavit , a fundamental requirement under the principle of natural justice , which mandates that both sides must be heard before a court passes an order. Consequently, the High Court set aside the earlier order , but allowed the producer to approach the single judge again for early disposal . The judge will now decide whether the referral to the revising committee was justified.

The film, originally slated for a Pongal 2026 release , now faces uncertain prospects . “Jana Nayagan” is reportedly a high-budget production , with estimates ranging around ₹150–250 crore , reflecting Vijay’s stature and the scale of production. Fans and industry observers had high expectations, particularly because the film has been speculated to be released prior to Vijay’s full-fledged entry into politics , the film actor Vijay made this confirmation.

The legal wrangle began after the CBFC’s 5-member examining committee recommended certification on December 22, 2025 . Subsequently, based on a complaint from one of the committee members, the CBFC Chairperson referred the matter to the revising committee , communicated to the producer on January 5. The single judge’s order attempting to override this process was thus stayed by the First Bench.

At present, the censor certificate has not been issued , and the film’s release remains in limbo. Observers note that the case highlights the delicate balance between judicial intervention and the CBFC’s statutory role , as well as the heightened attention on Vijay’s projects due to his political ambitions . Fans and the film fraternity now await the next hearing, which will determine whether the movie can release in time for the festive season.
