‘Jana Nayagan’ Effect? Vijay Govt Introduces New 5-Show Rule for Tamil Theatres, Scraps Old 4-Show Cap
Tamil Nadu’s theatres are gearing up for bigger crowds, louder whistles, and longer queues after the state government officially scrapped the decades-old four-show limit and allowed cinemas to screen five shows a day during the first week of new Tamil film releases .
The order, approved by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, has instantly become one of the most talked-about developments in Kollywood, especially because it arrives just weeks before the release of Jana Nayagan Vijay’s much-hyped final film before his full transition into politics.
Under the amended Tamil Nadu Cinemas (Regulation) Rules, 1957 , theatres can now run five daily shows during the opening seven days of a new Tamil film, as well as on weekends, public holidays, and local festival days. The biggest relief for exhibitors is that they no longer need separate approval from district collectors or police authorities for the extra screening.
The decision followed a May 16 meeting between the Chief Minister and representatives of the Tamil film industry, where theatre owners reportedly pushed for easier regulations, revised ticket pricing, tax relief, and support for struggling cinemas.
While the government says the rule applies to all Tamil releases, industry insiders believe Jana Nayagan could become the biggest beneficiary. The film, directed by H. Vinoth and featuring Pooja Hegde and Bobby Deol, is already carrying enormous buzz as Vijay’s cinematic farewell.
The movie has dominated headlines for months over release delays, censor hurdles, piracy leaks, and political controversy, turning it into more than just another mass entertainer.
Actor-producer Vishal welcomed the new rule, calling it a timely boost for theatres and producers at a time when cinema halls are battling OTT competition and fluctuating footfalls.
