Jamia Approves Students’ Union Constitution, Sets May 15 Deadline for Implementation

Jamia Millia Islamia has approved the implementation of its Students’ Union constitution and set May 15, 2027, as the deadline for completing the process. The university has also directed students to immediately call off their ongoing protest and hunger strike.

In an order dated October 29, the university said the competent authority had considered a request submitted by students and issued directions on implementing the constitution of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union (JMISU), conducting elections and withdrawing disciplinary action against protesters.

The university said the election schedule would be notified in accordance with the recommendations and guidelines of the Lyngdoh Committee on Student Elections. Polls will be held within six weeks of the commencement of the academic session, the order stated. With the session expected to begin around July 16, 2027, the elections are likely to take place by late August.

The order also directed the university to revoke show-cause notices, disciplinary inquiries, rustications, suspensions and campus bans issued in connection with participation in the protest. The directions cover disciplinary action linked to the agitation.

The order was issued by Registrar Professor M M Rizvi and circulated to university officials, including deans, heads of departments, the chief proctor and the security adviser.

The decision follows a protest that began on October 12, with students demanding the restoration of the students’ union and a definite timeline for elections. The agitation included a hunger strike and continued amid a standoff between the students and the university administration.

The university has directed the protesting students to end the agitation with immediate effect. The next steps include completing the constitution's implementation process and announcing the election schedule in accordance with the prescribed guidelines.
