Jaiswal Ton, Rohit's 79 and Prasidh's Fifer Power India to Dominant Win Over Afghanistan
Yashasvi Jaiswal's unbeaten century , a fluent knock from Rohit Sharma , and a career-best bowling performance by Prasidh Krishna guided India to a comprehensive nine-wicket victory over Afghanistan in the third and final ODI in Chennai on Saturday, sealing a 3-0 clean sweep of the series.
Chasing a modest target of 219 , India cruised to 224 for one in just 28.4 overs , with Jaiswal remaining unbeaten on 110 and Rohit contributing 79 in a dominant opening stand that effectively ended Afghanistan's hopes.
The match was significant for both Indian openers. Rohit needed a substantial score amid increasing competition for places in the batting order, while Jaiswal was eager to strengthen his credentials in India's crowded top-order lineup. The duo responded with an impressive display of attacking cricket, adding 170 runs for the first wicket in 22.5 overs .
Rohit began cautiously before shifting gears against Afghanistan's bowlers. He particularly targeted star leg-spinner Rashid Khan , striking him for boundaries and sixes with ease. The Indian captain displayed excellent timing and shot selection throughout his innings, reaching his half-century in 47 balls.
Jaiswal looked comfortable from the outset and punished anything loose. The left-hander raced to his fifty in just 38 balls , mixing elegant drives with powerful strokeplay. He eventually reached his second ODI century in 83 deliveries and fittingly finished the match with a six.
Rohit's innings ended when he was caught in the deep off Mohammad Nabi , but by then India had virtually secured victory.
Earlier, Prasidh Krishna produced a brilliant spell of 5 for 23 , dismantling Afghanistan's top order after the visitors elected to bat first. The pacer exploited the conditions perfectly and reduced Afghanistan to 36 for four , putting them under severe pressure inside the opening 10 overs.
Prasidh removed Rahmanullah Gurbaz , Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmat Shah , all caught in the slips after attempting drives outside the off stump. He then claimed his fourth wicket when Darwish Rasooli mistimed a pull shot, leaving Afghanistan struggling.
Despite the early collapse, Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi led a determined recovery effort. The left-hander played a patient and composed innings, scoring 102 runs off 131 balls to register his maiden ODI century .
Shahidi first added 105 runs for the fifth wicket with Azmatullah Omarzai , who contributed a valuable 50 , before sharing another important partnership with Nabi. While Shahidi anchored the innings, Omarzai adopted a more aggressive approach and helped Afghanistan regain some momentum.
Even after battling cramps in the latter stages of his innings, Shahidi continued to fight and guided Afghanistan beyond the 200-run mark. However, wickets fell regularly at the other end, preventing the visitors from posting a more challenging total.
Afghanistan were eventually bowled out for 218 , a score that proved insufficient against India's powerful batting unit. The visitors' difficult day was further compounded by a five-run penalty after Shahidi was penalised for repeatedly running on the protected area of the pitch.
With a dominant performance in both departments, India completed a convincing series sweep and continued their strong run in ODI cricket.
