Jaishankar–Rubio meeting in New York at UNGA, trade talks and global expectations
External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar met with United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio in New York on Monday on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session.
This interaction is being closely watched as both nations attempt to ease recent trade frictions and reinvigorate their strategic partnership. The last face-to-face between Jaishankar and Rubio was in July during the 10th Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Washington, though they also held earlier discussions in January. Tensions had spiked after US President Donald Trump imposed steep tariffs on Indian goods linked to Russian oil imports. However, Trump recently sounded optimistic, saying he expected "no difficulty" in finalising a deal.
Another issue on the agenda is the H-1B visa row . Indians in the US have raised concerns after Trump signed an executive order introducing a USD 100,000 fee on visas for skilled tech workers. The White House later clarified that the rule only affects new applicants, not existing visa holders, but uncertainty remains.
Rubio, during Senate hearings earlier this month for Sergio Gor, Trump’s nominee for US Ambassador to India, described India as “one of the top relationships” the US holds today. He emphasised India’s central role in shaping the Indo-Pacific, calling the region the "story of the 21st century" and asserting that India stood at the “core” of America’s long-term strategic vision.
The New York meeting also precedes formal trade talks in Washington , where Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is leading an Indian delegation. A Ministry of Commerce release said “positive discussions” were held during the September 16 visit of US trade officials to India, with both sides agreeing to intensify negotiations toward a deal.

The bilateral with Rubio, therefore, comes at a critical juncture—not just for India-US ties but also for building consensus on issues that will dominate UNGA deliberations in the days ahead.
