Jaishankar Kicks Off 9-Day Caribbean Tour, Jamaica First on Itinerary

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has begun his multi-nation Caribbean tour , arriving in Jamaica for the first leg of a visit aimed at strengthening India’s diplomatic, economic, and cultural engagement with the region.

The visit, now understood to run from May 2 to May 10 , includes Jamaica, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago , all members of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). Jaishankar received a warm welcome in Kingston and has already initiated meetings, including talks with Jamaica’s foreign minister, while outlining plans to engage political leaders, business stakeholders, and the Indian diaspora.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, discussions across the three countries will cover the full spectrum of bilateral cooperation , along with regional and global issues . The outreach reflects India’s expanding role among developing nations and its focus on South-South cooperation .

A key pillar of the visit is the shared heritage of Girmitiya communities , descendants of Indian indentured labourers who settled in the Caribbean during the colonial era. These historic ties continue to underpin strong people-to-people connections and cultural affinity.
