A Jaipur-Delhi tourist sleeper bus overturned near Hanuman Mandir and Jhandewalan Metro Station in central Delhi’s Karol Bagh area early Wednesday, leaving two passengers dead and 23 others injured , officials said.

According to police, the accident occurred at around 1 am near a roundabout close to the temple , when the bus reportedly lost control while taking a sharp turn . A PCR call was received at the Karol Bagh police station reporting that several passengers were trapped inside the overturned vehicle.

The bus, a private tourist sleeper coach travelling from Jaipur to Delhi , had about 30 passengers on board and was headed towards the Fatehpuri–Sadar Bazar area when the mishap occurred.

Police teams led by the station house officer of Karol Bagh, along with picket staff and night patrol personnel, rushed to the spot and found the bus lying on its side. Passengers were trapped inside the vehicle , some attempting to break the windows to escape as they cried for help.

Rescue operations were launched jointly by Delhi Police, Delhi Fire Services and local residents . At least two fire tenders were deployed , and a JCB machine was brought in to lift the bus to free those trapped beneath the vehicle.

About 10 critically injured passengers were taken to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, while 12 were admitted to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and one was shifted to Lady Hardinge Medical College, police said.

Two passengers later succumbed to injuries at RML Hospital . One of the deceased was identified as Shehbaj Alam (30) from Bijnor in Uttar Pradesh , while the identity of the second victim, believed to be in his mid-20s, has yet to be confirmed.

The bus driver, Pankaj Kumar (26) from Alwar in Rajasthan , has been detained and is undergoing treatment at Lady Hardinge Medical College. Police have registered a case and launched an investigation to determine whether overspeeding, driver negligence or a mechanical issue caused the crash.

Passengers and eyewitnesses claimed the bus was moving at high speed before losing control , although officials said the exact cause of the accident will be determined after the inquiry is completed.
