Jaipur water crisis: Over 1,000 residents fall ill after sewage suspected in drinking supply
A serious public health crisis has emerged in Jaipur’s Sushilpura locality after suspected sewage contamination of drinking water reportedly left more than 1,000 residents ill , sparking protests and urgent action from authorities.
Over the past week, families across the neighbourhood have been battling vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain, fever and nausea , symptoms typically linked to waterborne infections . Residents say the illness has spread rapidly, with children and elderly people suffering the most , and almost every household reporting at least one sick member.
Many families have stopped using tap water completely and are now depending on water tankers or packaged drinking water to meet their daily needs. Residents say the crisis has not only affected their health but also placed an unexpected financial burden on families already dealing with medical expenses.
Local health facilities have reported a sharp rise in cases. Doctors at nearby government dispensaries said hundreds of patients have sought treatment in recent days , while private clinics in the area are also witnessing a surge in people reporting similar symptoms.
Residents believe the contamination began during recent road construction work , which allegedly damaged underground pipelines. The damage is suspected to have allowed sewage to mix with drinking water lines , resulting in contaminated water flowing through taps in several households.
Public anger has been mounting over the situation. Residents staged protests demanding immediate action and restoration of safe drinking water. Many said they had noticed foul-smelling and discoloured water in the supply for several days before the health crisis escalated.
Following the protests, authorities have launched emergency measures. Teams from the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) and the health department have been deployed to inspect pipelines, repair damaged infrastructure and monitor the health situation.
Officials said water tankers, medicines and medical assistance are being arranged for affected families while repair work on the pipelines continues. Authorities have also assured residents that efforts are underway to restore a clean and safe drinking water supply at the earliest .
Meanwhile, health officials are closely monitoring the outbreak as the city administration works to contain the crisis and prevent further spread of illness.
