
Jagtial Marks 287th Birth Anniversary of Sant Sevalal Maharaj
The 287th birth anniversary of revered tribal spiritual leader Sant Sri Sevalal Maharaj was celebrated with devotion and cultural vibrancy on Friday at the District Integrated Office Complex under the aegis of the Tribal Welfare Department. The event brought together officials, tribal representatives, artists, and students to honour the legacy of a leader who continues to inspire indigenous communities across the region.
District Collector B. Satya Prasad , who attended as chief guest, inaugurated the celebrations and paid floral tributes to the spiritual icon. Addressing the gathering, he said Sevalal Maharaj’s teachings remain a guiding force for tribal communities by promoting moral values, social harmony, cultural preservation, and disciplined living . He urged people to give up harmful habits, cultivate positive practices, and lead dignified lives rooted in tradition and ethical principles.
The Collector observed that the continued celebration of the leader’s birth anniversary nearly three centuries after his lifetime reflects the enduring relevance of his ideals. He expressed hope that society would progress by following the path shown by Sevalal Maharaj, whose message continues to strengthen community identity and unity.
Sant Sri Sevalal Maharaj (1739–1806) is widely revered as a spiritual guide and socio-religious reformer of the Banjara (Lambada/Gor) community . He advocated unity, social reform, respect for nature, compassion toward living beings, and the preservation of tribal culture and self-respect. His teachings discouraged addiction and social evils while encouraging discipline, equality, and collective welfare principles that continue to shape tribal traditions and community life.
Adding colour to the celebrations, tribal children performed traditional dances in vibrant attire, drawing applause from the audience. In a notable gesture of solidarity, the District Collector wore traditional tribal dress and personally appreciated the young performers. Folk songs and cultural presentations by local artists showcased the rich heritage, artistic traditions, and living cultural expressions of tribal communities.
Sevalal Maharaj Jayanti is observed across Telangana and neighbouring states with devotion, community gatherings, and cultural programmes, reflecting his enduring role as a symbol of tribal pride, cultural identity, and social reform .
