IUML Meets Tamil Nadu DGP, Demands Action Over Attacks on Mosques in Chennai
The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) on Wednesday demanded a fair and transparent investigation into recent attacks on mosques in Chennai’s Koyambedu and Vadapalani areas, seeking stringent legal action against those responsible and enhanced security at places of worship.
A delegation led by IUML Tamil Nadu State General Secretary K A M Muhammed Abubacker met the Director General of Police (DGP) and submitted a memorandum urging the police to thoroughly investigate the incidents and ensure accountability.
Addressing a press conference after the meeting, Abubacker expressed concern over the alleged vandalism of mosque premises and the assault on an Imam at the Jai Nagar mosque in Koyambedu.
He said the incidents appeared to be deliberate attempts to disturb communal harmony in Tamil Nadu and urged the police not to conclude that the Koyambedu attack was the act of a mentally unstable individual without conducting a comprehensive investigation.
“We have apprised the DGP of the orchestrated nature of these attacks on our places of worship in Koyambedu and Vadapalani,” Abubacker said, calling for the identification of those responsible and action in accordance with the law. The reported incidents have heightened tensions in the affected localities, with members of the community staging protests and seeking stronger police intervention.
The unrest reportedly began on October 14, when a mosque on Gangai Amman Koil Street in Vadapalani was targeted in an early-morning attack. A subsequent incident at the Jai Nagar mosque in Koyambedu involved alleged vandalism and an assault on an Imam.
Abubacker said the DGP had assured the delegation that the incidents would be investigated swiftly and impartially, and that those responsible would be brought to book irrespective of their affiliations.
According to the IUML leader, the police also promised to strengthen night patrols and increase security around mosques in the affected areas to prevent further incidents. The IUML appealed to the public to maintain peace, avoid spreading rumours and allow the investigation to proceed without disturbing communal harmony.
