'It's All Out in the Media': Shubman Gill Clears Air on Rohit Sharma's Retirement Rumours

India captain Shubman Gill has firmly dismissed speculation surrounding Rohit Sharma's retirement, stating that there has been no discussion within the Indian dressing room about the veteran opener stepping away from international cricket. Gill's clarification came after India lost the third ODI to England at Lord's, where reports suggested it could be Rohit's final appearance for the national team.

Speaking at the post match press conference, Gill made it clear that neither Rohit nor the team management had informed the players of any retirement plans.

"We have not had a chance. He has not told us anything. It's all out in the media. It has not been discussed at all," Gill said, dismissing the speculation that has dominated headlines over the past few days.

The retirement rumours gathered pace ahead of the Lord's ODI, with several reports claiming the 39 year old could announce his decision after the match. However, Rohit responded in emphatic fashion with a stunning 138 off 110 balls, an innings featuring 17 fours and five sixes. The knock made him the first Indian batter to score an ODI century at Lord's, reaffirming his status as one of India's finest white ball batters despite the team's 27 run defeat.

Gill also praised Rohit's calmness during the chase, saying the experienced opener handled the pressure brilliantly and showed why he remains one of India's most dependable players. Although India fell short while chasing England's imposing total of 387/3, Rohit's innings emerged as the biggest positive for the visitors.

Rohit himself later laughed off the retirement rumours during a BCCI interaction.

"If there is no noise, there is no fun," the Indian opener said with a smile, adding that he pays little attention to outside speculation and remains focused on representing the country. His remarks further reinforced that there has been no immediate decision regarding his ODI future.

Several reports have also pointed out that the speculation largely stemmed from Rohit's age and India's ongoing transition after his retirement from Test cricket. However, there has been no official indication from either Rohit or the BCCI that he is planning to retire from ODI cricket. In fact, the senior batter is still expected to play a crucial role in India's preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup, with the team management continuing to value his experience at the top of the order.

Gill, meanwhile, shifted the focus to India's future, stressing the need to improve fitness standards and manage player workloads better after multiple injury concerns during the England tour.
