Italy is set to host a Wimbledon tune up tournament from 2028 , a move that highlights its growing ambition in global tennis and its push to expand world class sporting infrastructure . The proposed grass court event could even be staged at Milan’s iconic San Siro stadium , reflecting a bold vision to merge football heritage with elite tennis.

The ATP 250 level tournament, currently held in Brussels, has been acquired by the Italian Tennis and Padel Federation and will be relocated to Italy as part of its long term calendar expansion. Federation president Angelo Binaghi said the final venue is yet to be confirmed, but indicated that northern Italy remains the leading option due to favourable weather conditions during the grass court season.

He also pointed to innovative global trends, including Madrid’s plan to introduce tennis facilities inside the Santiago Bernabeu, suggesting that Italy could follow a similar path. In that context, San Siro emerges as a strong possibility, offering a dramatic setting that could redefine how grass court tennis is experienced.

The proposal underlines Italy’s broader goal of strengthening its position in international tennis , not just through tournaments but also through venue innovation and infrastructure development . It signals a strategic effort to enhance visibility, attract global audiences, and modernize the sport’s presentation.

Italy already plays a major role in elite tennis, hosting the ATP Finals in Turin and the Davis Cup Finals in Bologna , while also investing in major upgrades such as a planned retractable roof for Rome’s Campo Centrale ahead of the 2028 Italian Open.

The rise of stars like Jannik Sinner has further boosted the country’s tennis profile, alongside strong performers such as Jasmine Paolini and Lorenzo Musetti, reinforcing Italy’s growing depth in the sport.

With the Wimbledon tune up event from 2028 , Italy is clearly positioning itself not just as a host nation, but as a key architect of modern tennis growth , blending tradition, innovation, and global ambition.
