ISRO to triple spacecraft output, launch Chandrayaan-4 in 2028: Chairman

ISRO is gearing up for one of its busiest phases yet, with seven more launches planned before the end of the current financial year, even as India’s first human spaceflight mission remains scheduled for 2027, Chairman V. Narayanan said. In an interview with PTI, he said the space agency is entering a period of rapid scaling in science, technology and industrial capacity, aimed at significantly strengthening India’s position in the global space sector.

Narayanan said the upcoming launches include a commercial communication satellite, multiple PSLV and GSLV missions, and the milestone deployment of the first PSLV entirely manufactured by Indian industry a major advancement in the privatisation of India’s launch ecosystem. He added that ISRO is on track to triple its spacecraft production to meet the rising demand for scientific, strategic and commercial missions.

He reaffirmed that Gaganyaan, India’s first human spaceflight mission, remains scheduled for 2027, with preparatory uncrewed missions progressing as planned.

Narayanan also highlighted ISRO’s next ambitious lunar mission, Chandrayaan-4, targeted for launch in 2028. The mission is expected to focus on advanced lunar exploration, including sample-return capabilities, building on the success of Chandrayaan-3 and India’s growing expertise in deep-space technology.

With an expanded flight calendar and major programmes on the horizon, ISRO’s roadmap signals a transformative era for India’s space capabilities.
