ISRO Gears Up for EOS-05 Launch: India's New Space Eye Set for Liftoff

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is preparing for the launch of EOS-05, a sophisticated Earth observation satellite, aboard the GSLV-F17 rocket in the early hours of September 4. The mission will lift off at 2:55 AM IST from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, with live coverage beginning at 2:25 AM on ISRO's official YouTube channel.

Also known as GISAT-1A, the satellite weighs 2,367 kilograms and holds special significance as India's first imaging satellite to be placed in geosynchronous orbit. Unlike satellites in lower orbits that pass over regions periodically, a geosynchronous orbit allows EOS-05 to remain fixed relative to a specific point on Earth. This means the satellite can maintain a near-continuous, uninterrupted view of the Indian subcontinent, a capability that sets it apart from most conventional Earth observation missions.

EOS-05 is equipped with advanced imaging cameras designed to support disaster monitoring, agricultural assessment, and environmental tracking. Because it can observe the same regions repeatedly and in near real-time, the satellite is expected to give Indian authorities a powerful tool for tracking floods, cyclones, crop patterns, and other fast-changing conditions on the ground, potentially improving response times during emergencies.

The launch also carries weight for the GSLV rocket itself. EOS-05 is the heaviest payload the GSLV has carried to date, making this flight a notable technical milestone for the vehicle. The mission additionally ends an eight-month gap since the GSLV's last launch, adding further anticipation around its performance.

Once operational, EOS-05 is expected to strengthen India's Earth-monitoring infrastructure, offering both scientific data and practical, actionable information for sectors like agriculture, disaster management, and environmental protection. The mission reflects ISRO's continued push to build satellites that serve real-world needs on the ground, not just scientific research, reinforcing India's growing footprint in space-based observation technology.
