ISRO Clears Three Critical Gaganyaan Crew Module Tests Ahead of Human Spaceflight

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully completed three major qualification tests of the Gaganyaan crew module systems , marking another significant milestone in India's ambitious human spaceflight programme. The tests validated key safety and structural mechanisms designed to ensure the safe return of astronauts during future missions.

The first test focused on the Crew Module Uprighting System (CMUS) , a critical safety feature that enables the crew module to automatically return to an upright position after splashing down in the sea. ISRO said the cold-gas-based system was successfully qualified through a system-level inflation test, during which stored high-pressure gas inflated the flotation devices by operating the control valves. The capability is considered essential for ensuring astronaut safety during post-landing recovery operations.

The second qualification test evaluated the crew-service module umbilical separation mechanism , which connects the crew module—where astronauts are housed—to the service module that provides propulsion and power. ISRO successfully demonstrated the clean separation of the CSU-2 mechanism from a simulated crew module while also validating the structural stability of the crew module panel and its interfaces. The separation sequence is a crucial part of the spacecraft's Earth re-entry process.

The third test verified the structural integrity of the crew module during the apex cover separation event . The apex cover protects the parachute system and associated subsystems throughout the mission and must separate flawlessly before parachutes are deployed to slow the crew module for a safe descent and splashdown.

ISRO said the successful completion of these tests strengthens the reliability of several mission-critical systems that will support the safe re-entry and recovery of astronauts. The achievement represents another important step towards the Gaganyaan mission, India's first indigenous human spaceflight programme, as the space agency continues to validate the technologies required to carry Indian astronauts safely into space and back.
