Two Israeli soldiers have been sentenced to military prison after an incident in southern Lebanon involving the desecration of a Virgin Mary statue , an act that has intensified scrutiny of military conduct and religious sensitivities in the conflict zone.

According to the Israeli military, one soldier placed a cigarette in the mouth of the statue while another photographed the act. The image later went viral on social media , showing the posing soldier with a cigarette in his own mouth beside the statue, triggering widespread condemnation and accusations of disrespect toward Christian religious symbols .

The army said the soldier who posed will serve 21 days in detention, while the soldier who took the photograph will serve 14 days. Officials stressed that the conduct violated military discipline and reaffirmed respect for freedom of religion and worship and protection of holy sites.

The incident is the latest in a series of controversies in southern Lebanon, following earlier cases in which Israeli soldiers damaged a crucifix and a statue of Jesus , also in the village of Debel, leading to disciplinary action and jail sentences. Reports note that in those cases, multiple troops were present but failed to intervene, prompting internal criticism.

The incidents have drawn condemnation from religious leaders, international observers, and political figures, including Israeli officials, amid broader tensions linked to ongoing operations against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon .

While the military insists its operations target militant infrastructure, repeated episodes involving religious symbols have raised concerns about accountability, discipline, and the protection of civilian and sacred sites during the conflict.
