Militants linked to the Islamic State killed at least 29 people in a late-night attack on a village in northeastern Nigeria, underscoring the region’s persistent security challenges.

The assault took place on Sunday in Guyaku village in Gombi Local Government Area of Adamawa State. Witnesses said gunmen stormed the area while residents, including youths, had gathered at a football ground, opening fire and triggering panic as people fled.

The attack reportedly lasted for several hours , with the assailants shooting indiscriminately and setting homes and other structures ablaze, causing widespread destruction in the rural community.

The Islamic State claimed responsibility via a message on Telegram, though officials have not confirmed which regional affiliate such as ISWAP carried out the strike.

State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, who visited the affected village, described the killings as “tragic and unacceptable” and assured that security agencies were working to restore normalcy and prevent further violence.

The motive remains unclear , but such attacks are often linked to insurgent efforts to assert territorial control, retaliate against communities suspected of aiding security forces, and spread fear among civilians. Northeastern Nigeria has long faced violence from extremist groups, including Boko Haram factions aligned with the Islamic State.

The country continues to grapple with a broader security crisis , marked by recurring attacks, kidnappings, and raids. In a separate incident, gunmen reportedly abducted children from an orphanage elsewhere, highlighting the widespread nature of insecurity.

The latest attack reflects the ongoing challenge for authorities in securing vulnerable communities despite sustained military operations.
