Is Trump Considering Sergio Gor for Marco Rubio’s Job? Post-Midterms Shake-Up Likely, Says Report
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio's first foreign trip after the Republican midterm setback comes amid speculation over a possible reshuffle in President Donald Trump's administration, with US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor reportedly emerging as a contender for some of the government's top positions.
According to The Washington Sun, Gor has been laying the groundwork for a major promotion and could be considered for a senior role at the State Department or the White House. The positions reportedly under consideration include Secretary of State, Deputy Secretary of State and White House Chief of Staff.
Gor, a longtime Trump confidant with close links to the president's family, enjoys considerable access within the administration. A US official familiar with internal discussions told The Sun that Gor "wants more of a forward-facing role". Another State Department source described him as being "giddy for the limelight" during major international events.
A Trump adviser told the publication that the president "loves the guy", adding that Gor had supported Trump during his political difficulties by bringing him deals rather than asking for favours.
Gor currently serves as the US ambassador to India and Special Envoy for South and Central Asia. He previously headed the White House Office of Presidential Personnel and played a key role in vetting and appointing thousands of administration officials. He is also closely associated with Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr.
The speculation comes as questions grow over Rubio's political future. Although he has not announced plans to leave the administration, Republican circles and State Department officials reportedly believe he could eventually step down to prepare for a possible 2028 or 2032 presidential run.
Meanwhile, Gor has also reportedly been considered for the Deputy Secretary of State position currently held by Christopher Landau. The Sun reported that Landau had told colleagues before the midterms that he would resign if Republicans lost control of Congress, amid concerns about Democratic-led investigations. However, Landau denied the claim.
The report also comes amid a wider White House shake-up following the Republican losses. Trump has fired White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and replaced her with her deputy, Stephen Miller.
Both Gor and Landau have rejected the reporting. Gor called the story "complete and total bullshit" and dismissed speculation about replacing Rubio.
" He is irreplaceable, and a dear friend who I have the joy of working with every day as US ambassador to India," Gor said, praising Rubio as the "most qualified, accomplished, and greatest secretary of state in history". He added that he had "zero interest in any other role".
