Is JD Vance The Next Trump? Vice President Emerges In Spotlight As Republicans Eye 2028

US Vice President JD Vance took centre stage at the Republican midterm convention on Thursday, drawing loud chants of “JD! JD!” as the party sought to energise its supporters ahead of elections that could threaten its control of Congress.

Vance delivered his keynote address on the second and final night of the convention in Dallas, speaking shortly before President Donald Trump. The prominent speaking slot put the vice president firmly in the spotlight at a time when Republicans are already looking beyond the November midterms towards the party’s future after Trump.

Vance has not confirmed whether he plans to seek the Republican presidential nomination in 2028, while Trump has not publicly chosen a successor. But his reception in Dallas underlined growing interest in the vice president’s political future.

The immediate challenge for Republicans, however, is the November midterm elections. The party is attempting to maintain its House and Senate majorities despite concerns over voter enthusiasm, the economy and the continuing war with Iran.

Trump has made clear that he sees his personal political influence as crucial to the Republican campaign. During a lengthy speech on Wednesday, he urged supporters to vote as though he himself were on the ballot, saying, “Pretend I'm on the ballot.”

The president also promised USD 5,000 payments to American adults if Republicans win, a proposal that could cost more than USD 1 trillion and has drawn criticism from budget experts and some Republicans.

Democrats, meanwhile, used their own events in Texas to attack the Republican gathering as an extravagant display disconnected from the economic concerns of ordinary Americans. Protesters also marched near the convention venue, criticising Trump and his administration.

The convention also showcased Republicans facing difficult congressional races, including Texas Senator Ted Cruz, while highlighting the party’s efforts to defend vulnerable seats.

For Vance, the event offered something more than a campaign platform. His reception suggested that while Trump remains the dominant figure in the Republican Party, the next generation of Republican leadership is already beginning to take shape.
