Irumudi Hits Netflix After ₹300 Crore Run, But Is Its 28-Day OTT Release Too Soon?
Ravi Teja’s “Irumudi” has arrived on Netflix after completing just 28 days in theatres, giving audiences an early chance to watch the Telugu hit at home but also raising questions about whether successful films are moving to streaming platforms too quickly.
Directed by Shiva Nirvana, “Irumudi” stars Ravi Teja alongside Priya Bhavani Shankar, Baby Nakshathra and Sai Kumar. The film, built around family relationships, devotion and a fight against exploitation, has emerged as one of the notable Telugu successes of 2026.
The film reportedly crossed the ₹300 crore worldwide mark in 28 days, while continuing to maintain a strong theatrical run. It has remained in cinemas into its fifth week, with reports indicating that its India collections continued to stay above ₹1 crore a day during the run.
“Irumudi” is now streaming on Netflix in Telugu, along with dubbed versions in Hindi, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam.
While the OTT release is good news for viewers, its timing has triggered a wider discussion within the Telugu film industry. The concern is that an early digital release can encourage audiences who might otherwise visit theatres to wait for the film to become available at home.
The traditional theatrical window has shortened considerably in recent years, with 28 days becoming a common benchmark for several films. Producers often have an incentive to agree to shorter windows because OTT deals can provide financial security, sometimes even before a film reaches theatres.
Exhibitors and distributors, however, have argued that films showing strong theatrical performance should be given more time to build on that momentum. Once a successful movie becomes available online, some potential theatre-goers may choose the cheaper and more convenient home-viewing option.
“Irumudi” also highlights the difficulty of predicting a film’s theatrical performance before release. A project expected to perform modestly can become a major hit, while a heavily anticipated film can disappoint.
The film’s success therefore raises a larger question for Telugu cinema: should the industry reconsider the 28-day OTT window for films that continue to attract audiences in theatres?
For “Irumudi”, the Netflix release may expand its reach considerably. But its early arrival also provides another test of how producers, distributors, exhibitors and streaming platforms balance theatrical earnings with the growing demand for faster digital releases.
