Irrigation Lifelines at Risk? Harish Rao Raises Alarm on Kaleshwaram, Devadula Motors

The functioning of Telangana’s flagship irrigation projects has come under sharp scrutiny after former minister T. Harish Rao raised serious concerns over what he described as technically flawed operational practices that could jeopardize critical infrastructure.

In a detailed communication to Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy , Rao highlighted alleged irregularities in the way heavy-duty motors are being operated across major lift irrigation systems, including the Kaleshwaram and Devadula projects . According to him, the repeated switching on and off of these massive motors violates established engineering principles and risks causing long-term damage.

At the heart of the issue is the nature of these high-capacity pumping systems , which are engineered to function continuously under stable loads. Experts note that frequent interruptions in operation can trigger mechanical stress , generate excessive vibrations, and accelerate wear in key components such as pumps, impellers, and bearings. Over time, such practices could lead to costly breakdowns and reduced operational efficiency.

Rao’s remarks go beyond technical criticism, hinting at deeper concerns over intent and accountability. He questioned whether the pattern of operation reflects administrative negligence or a deliberate attempt to damage infrastructure and shift responsibility onto the previous BRS government , which oversaw the construction of these projects.

Specific concerns were raised about operations in Chandalapur and several project packages, including packages 6, 8, 10, 11, and 12 , where he claimed the situation is particularly alarming. He stressed that these projects, built with substantial public investment , must be managed with strict adherence to engineering standards.

The issue carries significant weight for the state’s agricultural sector. Telangana’s lift irrigation projects are crucial in ensuring water supply to vast stretches of farmland, particularly in regions dependent on controlled water lifting systems. Any disruption or damage could directly impact crop cycles and farmer livelihoods.

Calling for immediate intervention, Rao urged the government to put an end to what he termed “unscientific practices” and ensure that project operations align with technical norms. He also cautioned against politicizing infrastructure that serves as a backbone for the state’s irrigation network.

With no official response yet from the government, the controversy is expected to intensify, potentially evolving into a broader political and administrative debate over the management of Telangana’s key irrigation assets.
