‘Irregularities Will Be Acted Upon’: Bengal Opens Review of Messi Stadium Chaos
West Bengal Sports Minister Nisith Pramanik has indicated that the state government may initiate a detailed probe into last year’s controversial “Messi fiasco” at the Salt Lake Stadium , stating that files have already been called for review and action will follow if irregularities are found.
Speaking after assuming charge of the Sports and Youth Welfare Department, Pramanik said the administration would examine all aspects of the event, including ticket sales, security arrangements, and administrative lapses during the visit of football icon Lionel Messi to Kolkata in December last year.
He said, “What happened was extremely unfortunate. We have sought all related files. The matter will be thoroughly examined , and if corruption or irregularities are established, necessary action will be taken.”
The high-profile event had turned chaotic after a large number of spectators allegedly entered the stadium without valid access, leading to security breaches and severe overcrowding . Several ticket holders complained they could not properly view the programme despite paying high prices. Messi reportedly left the venue early amid the commotion.
The incident had earlier triggered a political storm, with allegations pointing to then state sports minister Aroop Biswas over lapses in planning and crowd control. Police had also arrested event organiser Satadru Dutta in connection with the case.
Pramanik also said discussions were underway on whether refunds could be considered for affected spectators, though no final decision has been taken yet. He added that the government aims to restore public confidence by organising better-managed international sporting events in the future.
At the same time, he criticised the previous regime for weakening sports infrastructure, claiming athletes like Swapna Barman were forced to leave the state due to lack of support.
The government, he said, is now focused on reviving sports infrastructure, identifying young talent, and producing future Olympians from Bengal.
